From an Underused Hot Tub to a Backyard Sauna Retreat
Giving an Old Space a New Purpose
For years, a hot tub occupied this Pinckney backyard. But as its use declined and the maintenance continued, the homeowners began thinking about what could take its place.
The answer was an outdoor sauna.
Using essentially the same footprint as the existing hot tub, Sauna Bath Co. designed and built a custom outdoor sauna that completely changed how the family uses their backyard.
What had become an overlooked corner of the property is now one of the places everyone wants to be.
Built in Michigan, for Michigan
There are practical advantages to replacing a hot tub with an outdoor sauna. Maintenance is minimal, energy consumption is relatively low, and a properly constructed sauna can provide decades of enjoyment.
But this project also tells another story that's important to us: where and how something is built matters.
Sauna Bath Co. builds its outdoor saunas from the ground up right here in Southeast Michigan, using locally and regionally sourced materials whenever possible.
The northern white cedar used throughout this sauna was grown in Michigan. The glass came from a local supplier. Even the metal roof was fabricated locally.
The result isn't a prefabricated sauna shipped across the country and assembled in the backyard. It's a purpose-built structure constructed much like a small home and designed specifically to withstand Michigan's changing seasons for years to come.
The Character of Michigan Cedar
Step inside and one of the first things you notice is the cedar.
Michigan-grown northern white cedar brings warmth, texture, and natural character to the interior, along with the unmistakable aroma that becomes part of the sauna experience itself.
Surrounded by natural wood and enveloped in heat, the outside world begins to feel a little farther away.
It's one of the reasons material selection matters so much in a sauna. Cedar isn't simply a finish, it helps define how the space looks, smells, feels, and ages over time.
More Than a Backyard Upgrade
For this active family, the decision to build a sauna wasn't simply about replacing an aging hot tub. It was an investment in creating a space that would become part of their routine.
Sauna provides an opportunity to slow down after a workout, disconnect at the end of a long day, spend uninterrupted time together, or invite friends over for an experience that's a little different from the typical backyard gathering.
And that's exactly what has happened here.
Evening sauna sessions have become a regular ritual. Time in the heat is followed by a refreshing cold plunge and then a few quiet minutes outside cooling down beneath the Michigan sky.
Heat. Cold. Fresh Air. Repeat.
There is something particularly special about an outdoor sauna.
Maybe it's stepping from the intense warmth of the sauna into crisp evening air. Maybe it's the cold plunge waiting just outside. Or maybe it's simply having a reason to put down the phone, step outside, and spend some time together.
For this Pinckney family, an underused hot tub has been replaced by something entirely different, a backyard ritual they look forward to.
Sauna. Cold plunge. Fresh air. Relax.
Sometimes the best backyard renovation isn't about adding more.
It's about creating something you'll actually use.
