A Masterclass in Sauna Layout

When this large family relocated from Texas to Michigan, adding a custom sauna was on their basement renovation wishlist. We had the pleasure of collaborating with their custom home builder to bring this impressive Grand Rapids lower-level remodel to life. This project serves as a textbook example of how to optimally design an indoor sauna environment. By placing the shower immediately alongside the sauna, installing fully tiled floors with proper drains, and conveniently located just steps from the walkout basement door, perfect for cooling off outside or eventually adding a cold plunge, it creates a highly functional, luxury spa sanctuary right within the home's existing walls.

The Value of Early Expert Collaboration

This build highlights why it is so beneficial to bring a specialized sauna builder in during the initial planning phases. We love partnering with architects, interior designers, and custom home builders early on to educate them on crucial Finnish sauna fundamentals. Properly planning for ventilation, insulation requirements, floor drains, water supply lines, and electrical requirements from day one ensures the final product is built correctly, without costly retrofitting or compromised performance down the line.

A Cherished Daily Routine

Ultimately, the true measure of our success is how much the space is enjoyed. We are absolutely thrilled to hear that this custom sauna has become a staple of the family's daily wellness routine. The mother of the house has entirely replaced her hot tub usage with the sauna. While she occasionally enjoys the space with her children, she mostly cherishes the quiet, uninterrupted alone time, relaxing in the gentle, enveloping heat and steam of her private retreat.
