A Custom Backyard Sauna Near Ann Arbor

Tucked among the trees on the outskirts of Ann Arbor, this private backyard has been transformed into a peaceful wellness retreat. After visiting the property and discussing the homeowner’s vision, Sauna Bath Co. designed and built a custom outdoor sauna that exceeded expectations.

The homeowner initially explored several sauna kits, but it quickly became clear that a custom build offered the best experience and long-term value. Thoughtfully placed windows capture the natural views while maintaining privacy. The exterior siding complements the home, and premium materials and expert craftsmanship ensure the sauna will last for decades. Most importantly, every detail was designed around authentic Finnish sauna principles.

The result is a beautiful, enduring sauna that feels completely at home in its surroundings. As our customer’s testimonial describes this sauna “…experts in the kind of craftsmanship that transforms a sauna from purely functional to the place where function and beautiful design and craftsmanship meet.”

Why Choose a Wood-Burning Outdoor Sauna?

A wood-burning sauna engages every sense, turning the preparation itself into a meaningful ritual. Instead of simply pushing a button, you gather dry firewood, build the fire and allow the stove to gradually heat the stones, wood and air.

The strike of the match, the glow of the first flames and the crackle of burning wood signal the beginning of the experience. As warmth fills the room, the pace of everyday life begins to slow.

Once the sauna reaches temperature, a wood-burning stove produces a distinctly rich, enveloping heat. A high stone-mass stove like the one used in this design creates abundant, exceptionally soft steam when water is poured over the rocks. Inside the sauna, the sound of the fire, the dancing glow of the flames and the hiss of steam create an atmosphere that an electric heater simply cannot replicate.

Stepping outside afterward—surrounded by nature and beneath the stars—completes the experience.

A Ritual Worth the Effort

We live in a world built around convenience, but experiences often feel more rewarding when they require intention. Preparing a wood-burning sauna takes a little extra time and effort, yet that process is part of what makes it so satisfying.

It feels traditional, natural and deeply restorative—a connection to the way generations of Finns have enjoyed sauna before us. From preparing the fire to cooling down beneath the open sky, every step contributes to an experience that leaves you feeling refreshed, grounded and invigorated.
